Local Resources For Fix-A-Leak Week
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, leaky plumbing is often left to address at a later date. However these little drips quickly add up. The average household can leak up to 10,000 gallons of water every year, equivalent to 280 loads of laundry, 600 showers or your family’s water use for an entire month. So that toilet with a leaking flapper can waste up to 6,000 gallons per month and the bathroom sink with a small drip every ten seconds can rapidly add up to hundreds of gallons per month.
Fix a Leak Week, held March 16th – 22nd, gives us the chance to slow down and prioritize fixing our plumbing. And while Leak Detective isn’t a title many may carry, it’s really not rocket science to hunt leaks down and fix them. The Water-Use It Wisely campaign provides some great resources that can get you on your way to fixing and preventing leaks, and conserving one of the most precious natural resources in the West, our water. Here are some highlights to get you going:
Do a Home Water Audit that will give you a sense of how you use (or misuse) water in your daily life.
The Home Water Challenge provides tips and videos to help you fix leaky faucets and toilets, irrigate your plants efficiently and better understand your water use.
The Water Use Toolkit has plenty of local resources to help your water conservation, including a fantastic step-by-step Smart Home Water guide that starts with learning how to read your water meter to detect leaks.
If you prefer in-person learning, attend classes Valley-wide that will give you the know-how to reduce your water consumption.
By taking on the leaks in your home you will conserve water, save money and gain a sense of accomplishment for your handy person skills.
