Refugee and Immigrant Businesses Unite Community at Phoenix’s World Bazaar

The World Bazaar and Phoenix Community Market will showcase more exhibits of culture and diversity from the Phoenix area

Phoenix, AZ (April 11, 2017) – The World Bazaar & Phoenix Community Market returns after a successful inaugural year on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 19th Avenue and Camelback Park-and-Ride. The bi-annual event kicked off in May 2016 through a partnership between the city of Phoenix, Local First Arizona, and the International Rescue Committee of Phoenix with the idea to introduce the community to the variety of cultures that reside in the Valley. More than 40 refugee- and immigrant-owned businesses will showcase their crafts in front of thousands of attendees, including food, drinks, accessories, and unique talents from around the globe.

During the World Bazaar, attendees have the opportunity to visit, browse, and purchase from dozens of unique small businesses. Vendors and items available include African beadwork, dresses, scarves, jewelry, baskets, and gifts; Middle Eastern women’s fashion and jewelry; craft goods made by refugee women; Mexican handmade hair accessories; and much more. Attendees will also be able to sample a diverse array of foods and beverages like at the “food court”, including Ethiopian coffee, Iraqi bread, baklava, Mexican food, and can pick up locally grown foods at the farmer's market area. A “KidsZone” will feature face painting and other fun activities

100 percent of the profits made at each booth go directly to the participating business, allowing the minority entrepreneurs to continue investing in their small business.

“The World Bazaar is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the local community to really get to know their neighbors and collectively build a vibrant community,” said Nicky Walker, Development Manager for IRC. “More than just a very fun event for the entire family, past World Bazaars have been a wonderful way to welcome each other and build bridges across cultures.”
