Three Local Businesses Collaborate to Help Kickstart Your Brand


For many small business owners, the prospect of having the freedom and flexibility to run your business alone, just how you want, is one of the most appealing reasons to strike out on our own. But quickly we find that in order to thrive we need to bring in some outside help.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean hiring staff.

Two years ago, I had the idea of hosting an event to help local businesses and organizations get the professional photos they need for their marketing along with guidance for how to best use them.  When I started Another Hand Advantage, I primarily created websites for my clients, but I kept running into the same issue, they didn’t have high quality, branded images to use in their design.  As my services grew and I began offering marketing strategy as my core service, the need for these images from my clients increased even more. Their social media didn’t stand out, they rarely used images of themselves on their websites and when I suggested they work with a professional photographer it often was not in their budget.

I kept going back to my idea for a marketing and photography event and how it would be beneficial for business owners struggling to show their authenticity through their marketing images. I even asked a few photographers if they’d be interested in hosting, but their enthusiasm was limited. I knew this wasn’t something I could pull off by myself and I didn’t have the resources to hire an event planner, so my idea sat on the shelf while I waited for the right photographer to come along.

Luckily Crystal Hollman of Crystal Clear Photography was introduced to me and I instantly knew that her style of photography was the perfect fit. Crystal was already hosting what she called her Headshot Marathons and focused her skills on creating brand focused photoshoots for business owners. I reached out and shared my vision for an event to help business owners showcase their personality and brand with the right combination of my marketing strategy expertise combined with her eye for business portraits with personality. It didn’t take much convincing at all and soon I had found what I’d been looking for all along, a collaborative partner.

The best part?  Almost instantly we both thought to include Loren North of Through the Closet Door, whom I’d met at a previous Local First AZ event, to add on a personal styling component to the event.

The three of us met, I shared my vision for the event and three months later the Business Brand Kickstart was born. Not only had I found two professionals to add more value to the event, but we had created a collaboration. I no longer felt like an event planner and the task of putting on the event didn’t seem as daunting.  We each came to the table with new ideas and spurred each other along to keep thinking of ways to make the event even more valuable for the attendees.

After the positive response from the first event in September of 2017 we wanted to offer more Business Brand Kickstart events. Loren and I attended the February Local First Arizona lunch mixer and shared with the group how we had collaborated to bring together this unique event. Immediately after lunch Loren was approached by Beate Assmuth-Ong, owner of Mane Attraction Salon. Not only did she love the concept of the event, but she wanted to be a part of it, too, and offer hair and makeup touchups to all the attendees.

In addition to being excited to add another service to the event, I couldn’t help but look back on how far my vision had come thanks to the power of partnership. The collaboration is what helped this vision come to life and grow!

Don’t ever discount your big ideas or put them off because you think you don’t have what it takes to make it happen. You may just need to open up to the possibility for collaboration!  Instead of trying to do it all in your business or be the expert in all things, reach out to fellow business owners and begin a conversation about collaboration and partnership to help you on your journey.
