Many of you have been waiting for just the right time to pack up the car and head out to explore new territory. There is no better time than this coming November 12th, 2016 and no better place than the Verde Valley. The area has an incredible line up of community events that are sure to surprise, engage and delight even the most well traveled. Mark your calendar, pack your bags, and then hit the road for one or more of these six Verde Valley experiences you don’t want to miss.

Walkin’ On Main (11 AM to 5 PM):

The Verde Valley will celebrate Historic Highway 89A with the annual FREE "Walkin' on Main" event held in the heart of Old Town Cottonwood’s Historic District.  Main Street is closed to traffic allowing all to stroll the long stretch of galleries, shops and restaurants while also enjoying the event's family-friendly attractions.  This includes a car show, a juried art show, a live chalk-art mural from the Mingus Union Art Club, wine tasting from some of our favorite local vineyards, and live music featuring Sweet Baby Ray’s Blue Smoke, Sugar Thieves, and Jim Prime Time with Bob Corritore.  Selfie spots and photo opps will be scattered at key Old Town landmarks.  Be sure to hashtag #WalkinOnMain.

Juried Art Show (11 AM to 5 PM):

A main attraction of the Walkin’ On Main event is a newly revamped juried art show.  This year hosted by Old Town Frame Company, the show features ALL Arizona artists who have submitted pieces in oil/acrylic, watercolor, photography, and 2D Mixed Media/Other.  Twelve pieces in each category have been selected out of over 100 submissions.  A panel of judges will select a “Best” in each category and a “Best” overall.  Those who stop in to see this amazing display of local art at 1028 North Main Street can vote for People’s Choice. Awards will be presented on the main stage at 3 PM.

Historic Home and Building Tour (9 AM to 4 PM):

In conjunction with Walkin’ On Main, the City of Cottonwood’s Historic Preservation Commission hosts the fourth annual self-guided tour of historic homes and businesses in and around Cottonwood. This signature event showcases and celebrates the long history and unique character of historic Cottonwood.  Drawing folks from all over the state, it has been a source of pride and pleasure for local Verde Valley residents.  All proceeds from the tour go into a matching grant program to help beautify and preserve historic homes in Cottonwood. Docents staged at each stop will provide a brief history of the building and those who once lived there.  Tour participants can choose to walk and/or drive to the tour stops. The tour is not handicap accessible. Purchase your $20 ticket now.

Zeke Taylor Barbeque (11 AM to 2:30 PM):

This hometown favorite and one of the most anticipated events of the community began in 1991 by local legend, cowboy and rancher, Zeke Taylor, as a fundraiser for the Clemenceau Heritage Museum.  The tradition is carried on by Don Godard and his family, who slow roast 600 pounds of succulent beef in a pit of mesquite coals. For a nominal cost, enjoy, a delicious dinner of BBQ beef, beans, slaw, beverage and dessert. Then take a tour through the Historic Clemenceau School Building and the Clemenceau Bank.  It’s a great day of eating, visiting, and good entertainment, served by our great local Mingus Future Farmers of America (FFA) students. $10 per person, $5 for children under 10.

Community Kayak Day (9 AM to 4 PM):

Clarkdale Kayak Company is hosting this one day event to celebrate the Verde River and support One for the Verde, a non profit organization working to restore and protect the Verde River and its tributaries. Experience the thrill of kayaking the Verde River at a special low rate of $25.00 per person while supporting a local business and a local non profit organization.
