Historic Brewing Company Brings Home the Silver!
Congratulations to Flagstaff's Historic Brewing Company!
Historic Brewing Company was awarded the only medal given to the state of Arizona at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, one of America’s most competitive Festivals. The annual competition represented 1,752 breweries from all 50 states. Judges rated 7,227 beers within 96 categories, awarding 286 medals overall.
The Award-Winning Beer
Historic Brewing Co. was recognized in the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer style category for its Avant-Chard, a chardonnay barrel-aged Berliner Weisse. This medal winner was aged for four months in chardonnay barrels from Historic Brewing Company's sister winery Grand Canyon Wine Co, founded in 2011. These barrels previously stored the 2012, Arizona grown, Wanderlust Chardonnay. With light oak and vanilla aromas, this effervescent ale boasts delicious gooseberry and chardonnay flavor with a slightly sweet finish.
The Avant-Chard is one of the first beers in Historic’s Barrel-to-Bottle Series that began a little over one year ago when brewer Kristen Ewer from the well-respected Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware joined the Historic lineup. The award-winning beer was the brainchild of both Kristen and brewer Zack Stoll. Stoll has been with the company since its infancy. The Barrel to Bottle Series is focused on highly specialized, small batch, barrel-aged beers and is one of the first of its kind in Arizona. Historic’s barrel cooperage currently consists of roughly 80 barrels. Over the coming years, Historic plans to expand their barrel program into the largest in the state, shifting their primary focus away from high production towards the refined art of small batch, specialty brewing.
