Five Reasons Your Business Needs a Grid Bike Membership

April, also known as Earth Month, is a great time to look at how your business can lessen its impact on the planet. An easy and cost-effective way to practice sustainability in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Tempe is to sign up for a Grid Bike membership for your business.

Grid Bikes is one of the first bike share companies seen here in Arizona. They provide bikes that can be picked up at any station in the participating cities and taken to the rider's destination. They hope to increase bike ridership across town and create a positive environmental impact in the Valley.

Memberships in the program are available for businesses as well as individuals. Here are our top five reasons why your business needs a Grid Bike membership:

1. You’ll have healthy and clear-headed employees.

Let’s face it, work (and finding a parking spot these days) can be stressful. Exercise is the most frequently recommended method by health care professionals to reduce symptoms associated with stress. Biking is great for our physical health, as it improves cardiovascular fitness, reduces body fat, builds strength, and improves circulation. A 2011 study determined that participating in physical activity outdoors was associated with greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger, and depression. Giving your employees access to a Grid Bike to get to meetings or errands can up their mental and physical well being.

2. You won’t add to the brown cloud hovering over the Valley.

Air pollution is mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels, so gas-powered automobiles are a big part of the problem. In urban areas, automotive emissions are responsible for anywhere between 50 and 90 percent of air pollution. The air, water, and ground are affected by brake dust, dirt, oil, and gasoline leaking from cars. These pollutants can end up in our water system as well as the air we breathe. The more we ride bikes and the less we drive, the better off our entire community is, especially those with asthma, bronchitis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

3. You’ll support the local economy.

Grid Bikes is the only locally owned bike sharing program in Arizona. Studies have shown that when $100 is spent at a locally owned store, about $45 stays in state versus only $13 staying in the state when spent with an out of state company. By opting to support Grid, your company will be doing its part to grow Arizona’s economy.

4. You can save money.

You’ll have no need to write out those mileage reimbursement checks or repay parking fees when your staff travels via Grid Bike. If you have a company car, you can extend its life by using it less when your staff pedals instead of drives. You can also help your community save money as reports show states like Oregon have saved approximately $115 million per year in healthcare costs through its citizens being physically active by biking and/or walking as their regular form of transportation.

5. You’ll have something to add to the employee perk list.

Sure, your employees need a paycheck, but additional benefits like Grid Bike memberships are like icing on the cake. Fun perks like these make employees feel that they are valued by their employer and are more connected to their work.

The Details:

Grid Bikes has three “gears,” aka membership plans, to choose from. There is a minimum of five employees that need to be enrolled in a group membership. Once your company or organization enrolls, your employees will be able to sign up on the Grid Bike website by entering their organization’s promo code provided upon enrollment. Your company can opt to pay for the entire membership which is $60 per year or can split the payment between the company and your staff member. All plans include 60 minutes per day of use. The Grid Bikes team can visit your workplace and help your team get familiar with the program.

Local First Arizona's Experience:

Local First Arizona has had a Grid Bike membership for two years. The bikes get used for lunch meetings, visiting City Hall, meetings with members, trips to the Post Office, delivering flyers and spins around the neighborhood. Staff reports the bikes being easy to use, plus they love the adventurous feel to errands when out riding rather than driving. At rush hour when traffic gets backed up, choosing biking over driving is not only more fun but much faster as well.

To date, the Local First Arizona team has ridden over 255 miles on Grid Bikes, which equates to 10,204 calories burned, about $150 saved on mileage reimbursements (plus countless parking fees) and a reduction in carbon emissions by over 224 lbs.

Other businesses that utilize Grid Bikes for their employees are the City of Phoenix, City of Tempe, City of Mesa, Valley Metro, Phoenix Spokes People, CO+HOOTS and Capital Rideshare. Find more details on how your business can participate on Grid Bike’s website or by emailing [email protected].
