Marana’s Big Green Event puts sustainability front and center

Living a green and sustainable lifestyle has  gained significant support and traction over the past several years. The Marana Chamber of Commerce continues its role in the conversation on Saturday, November 2, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with its second-annual Big Green Event.

The event, at Crossroads Park in Marana, highlights several of the key players in Arizona’s sustainable ecosystem,  and share with attendees many simple ways that they can support green initiatives.

Sponsors of the event include CalPortland, Tucson Local Media, AnStar Productions, KOLD News 13, Tucson Electric Power, Hayes Construction, Right Away Disposal, Meritage Homes, The Fairfax Companies, Beacon Secure, 26Point2 Designs, Too Busy Gals, ArcLight Pictures, 96.1 KLPX, 2030 District, U.S. Green Building Council, and TRICO Electric Cooperative.

Attendees will be able to check out a variety of exhibits and booths that will educate them on building a more green community in engaging and meaningful ways. Among the exhibits at the event are a scavenger hunt along a nature path, a kid’s education and science center, a recycling tent, and a display of alternative and green vehicles including a Tesla, Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt.

There will be farmers market education, cooking demos, animal wellness sessions, live music, a green fashion show, and great local food.New to the event this year is local microbrew beergarden. The Big Green Event promises fun for attendees of all ages.

Everyone is encouraged to bring old electronics and other recyclable goods to the all-day recycling center. According to the Marana Chamber of Commerce’s Green Committee, only 24% of Tucson’s waste is recycled, even though as much as  75% of our overall waste is recyclable. Additionally, Tucsonans produce 740 tons of waste every day, so every contribution to recycling and conserving helps.

The Chamber will be holding a book exchange in an attempt to help book recycling, as well as break the Guinness World Record for most books exchanged in an 8-hour period. Bring a book to contribute and walk away with a different one!

Visitors have the chance to win prizes from Native Seeds Search, Zia Records Exchange, Surf Thru Car Wash, Pop-Cycle, and Mama’s Hawaiian BBQ, and many others. Raffles will be held every hour.  Come celebrate with the family for a great day in the park and go a little greener!
