LFA Member Recognized as Best for the World
Think Arizona businesses aren’t analyzing their environmental impact? Think again. Local First Arizona member Technicians for Sustainability in Tucson has garnered a significant achievement by being recognized in B Lab’s annual Best for the World awards in the Best for Environment category. This recognition puts TFS in league with well-known companies like New Belgium Brewing and Seventh Generation who have also been recognized in this category. To qualify for the award, businesses need to earn score in the top 10 percent of the Environment category on the B Impact Assessment. It might seem obvious that a company that installs solar panels are good stewards of the environment but the Best for the World recognition looks deeper than the fact that a company sells a product that is geared towards environmental sustainability. While the products it makes do come into play, the recognition also looks at a company’s performance through its facilities, focusing on materials, energy use and emissions. TFS excels in all these areas by having a solar powered office, a recycling program and practicing water conservation in their operations.
Nicole Koch, Director of Outreach at Technicians For Sustainability says: “Our beginnings were built on principles of sustainability. It's what drew us to working together, and it's what continues to drive us. We continue to push ourselves to find more efficient, thoughtful ways to operate. Our offices run on clean, renewable energy; our fleet is made up of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available, including a solar-powered, all-electric car. We continue to find ways to ensure the reuse or recycling of the majority of our byproducts. The majority of our staff have bike commuted to work for the last decade. Perhaps most importantly, we continue to challenge ourselves to do more.”
Becoming a B-certified company is verification in itself that a company is doing the good things it claims. The certification process focuses on a business holistically – from how they treat their employees to analyzing their supply chain and the relationships they build with their community. As more and more companies see the value in marketing themselves as good corporate citizens, B Corp certification is an unbiased recognition of those companies that are truly walking the walk.
