Tianguis Spring Festival is Around the Corner
The 2015 Tianguis Spring Festival, hosted by Fuerza Local and Local First Arizona, will celebrate family, culture, tradition, entertainment, and the Latino business community. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, March 28, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Del Sol Furniture in Phoenix, and will feature a wide range of activities including live music, Mexican and Latin American arts and crafts, entertainment for kids, and food vendors.
“Tianguis” in Spanish means an open-air market that is common throughout Mexico and Central America, originating from the ancient Aztec Nahuatl language. “The word ‘tianguis’ is a perfect name for the festival because we hope to emulate the central community feel of these open air markets with our festival,” says Carlos Velasco, Director of Fuerza Local. “Our goal with Tianguis is to bring the community together in a meaningful way.”
“This kind of event is a great way to celebrate Latino culture in Phoenix and connect individuals to the local businesses in their community,” says Velasco. “Last year the festival boasted over 1,000 attendees, and we look forward to even more growth for this year’s festival.”
New additions to Tianguis this year include raffles throughout the day, a surprise giveaway for the first 500 attendees, and a high school Battle of the Bands. “With an expanded list of activities, this year’s Tianguis will be a fun day for families to truly engage with the local business owners, community members, artists, and entrepreneurs that make our communities unique and vibrant,” said Kimber Lanning, Director of Local First Arizona, Fuerza Local’s umbrella organization.
Daniel Rodriguez, partner of Diaz, Rodriguez & Associates and member of Fuerza Local, said he is looking forward to attending this year’s Tianguis because of its impact on the local economy and unifying message. "Because our community is rich and full of entrepreneurs we need a common vision of how to move forward together and be intentional in where we invest our money,” said Rodriguez.
Tianguis will bring together more than 30 businesses to provide opportunities and activities for families in the community, including those focused in home improvement, restaurants, clothing and accessories, credit unions, radio, and more.
The Tianguis Spring Festival is generously sponsored by Colados Coffee & Crepes, Community Tire, Marisol Federal Credit Union, Desert School Federal Credit Union, Phoenix Raceway, Muebleria Del Sol, and Courtesy Chevrolet.
