Second Annual Tianguis Fuerza Local Festival Highlights Latino Culture in Arizona Business Community
The second annual Tianguis Fuerza Local Festival presented by Local First Arizona and Fuerza Local will be a free and family-friendly event with a special focus on the Spanish-speaking business community. The festival will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Golden Gate Community Center at 1625 N 39th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85009. The festival will serve as a way to engage the Phoenix-area and Latino communities in the “Buy Local” message.
Attendees to the festival can expect a fun-filled day of delicious food, live music, kid’s activities, and more. More than 30 local businesses will participate in this year’s event, providing a multitude of entertainment and activities.
“We are excited to see the rapid growth of our Fuerza Local initiative,” said Kimber Lanning, Executive Director of Local First Arizona. “The Latino business community is a significant factor in the health of the local Arizona economy, and it is important that we engage them in the conversation about supporting local businesses and keeping our dollars in Arizona.”
Recent studies show that for every $100 spent at local businesses, $45 will stay in the local community. For the same $100 spent at national chains, only $13 will stay in the community (Civic Economics, 2002). When more money stays and circulates throughout the local economy, it keeps more money in the pockets of our local business owners, creates thousands of jobs, and eliminates blight from the community.
“We’ve been successful in engaging the Spanish-speaking community with the Buy Local message in creative ways like Tianguis, but we have also helped Spanish-speaking business owners advance their business skills with our new Accelerator Program.” said Carlos Velasco, Director of Fuerza Local, of the progress Fuerza Local has made. “A group of Spanish-speaking business owners goes through a series of workshops on a variety of topics such as marketing, business finance, customer service, and other important themes. We just graduated our first class of students in January, and our second class just began their series of workshops this month. Some of our graduates will be participating in this year’s Tianguis.”
Proceeds from Tianguis Fuerza Local will go to benefit the Accelerator Program and other Fuerza Local programs. Tianguis Fuerza Local is a family-friendly event. Sponsors of the festival include Muebleria del Sol Furniture, Fuga Energy, Golden Gate Community Center, La Campesina 88.3 FM, Mujeres Unicas, the City of Phoenix, and Presna Hispanica. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
