Discover the Arts and Culture of Douglas Through Upcoming WeekendZona Trip
Have you ever explored Southern Arizona's Cochise County?
It is home to beautiful national monuments such as the Chiricahuas, delicious local wineries, and right before you get down to Mexico, the rural town of Douglas. Douglas was established in 1776 as a smelter town for the mining production in Bisbee. The town now holds years of history such as the Gadsden Hotel, Four Church Square (featured in the Guinness Book of World Records), the Border Air Museum (where Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart opened the first international airport in the U.S.), and tons of culture you will need to experience for yourself and we're here to help you do that.
July 20th-22nd, Local First Arizona Foundation will be offering a weekend getaway package to Douglas to experience the arts, culture, and heritage of this charming, border town. With a population of 15,000, Douglas was recently dubbed one of the nation’s best “micropolitan” areas with a growing economy and wonderful amenities.
The true heritage of the southwest is rooted in the town and is shared with everyone who visits there. Douglas’ history dates back to the 1500’s when Cabeza de Vaca established a route from Mexico. The town is full of history and offers a wealth of attractions for birders, hikers, and shoppers. Streets are lined with historic buildings including the Gadsden Hotel and the Grand Theatre. There are multiple hiking trails and outdoor experiences. Explore some of the cultures at Church Square which was in Ripley’s Believe It or Not as the only city block in the world with a different church on each corner.
WeekendZona trips are all-inclusive experiences coordinated by Local First Arizona Foundation staff with local businesses and partners in each community. Each trip is a highly curated experience that showcases “locals insider” spots and activities that guests might not otherwise know about.
“We want to show Arizonans that there are many unique vacation opportunities right here in our own state,” said Maya Azzi, Rural Program Coordinator for the Local First Arizona Foundation. “Every year, Arizonans spend $6.5 billion vacationing in California alone. If we could direct some of those dollars into Arizona’s rural communities, it would make a huge difference for those towns.”
