The 6 Most Popular New Year's Resolutions for the Northern AZ Localist

Many of us are excited to sweep 2016 into the rearview mirror and focus on being a healthy, organized, well-rounded person in the coming twelve months. Some of the most common New Year's resolutions can be fulfilled with opportunities and products from right here in Arizona.

Supporting businesses in Arizona does more than improve you; it also improves our state economy and community. When money is spent at a local business or organization over 40% more of your money stays within your state economy and more jobs are created inside Arizona. The money that stays here and jobs created assist in building a more vibrant community, while the presence of local business has been shown to increase community well-being and local character.

We gathered the six most popular New Year's Resolutions and gave them a Localist twist! Check out this guide for useful tips, inspiration, and resources to make your 2017 goals a reality.

Fitness and wellness goals top many of our New Year's Resolution lists. Unfortunately, they also seem to be the first one's we give up. I get it, the idea of hitting the gym everyday seems empowering at the start of the year, but once the next season of our favorite show is available to binge-watch it becomes a little more difficult to emerge from our cocoon of blankets. That's okay! 2017 is the year we break the "giving-up" cycle. All we have to do is keep these simple guidelines in mind:

  • Don't let a number define your success: fitness is more than just decreasing a number on the scale or exercising a specific number of times each week. Setting number- or frequency-specific goals tend to be more discouraging than motivational. We tend to overlook simple activities - such as forgoing the elevator for a trip up the stairs or taking the dog on a walk - that can count towards our exercise goals.
  • Find an exercise you actually enjoy: crazy concept, right? If running on the treadmill starts to feel like a chore, spice up your routine! Take your activity outside and explore one of the many beautiful trails throughout one of many Arizona State Parks or some of these other non traditional activities in Northern AZ outlined here:

Good Food Finder AZ

Good Food Finder AZ (GFF) is an Arizona statewide, online directory of local foods. Our goal is to provide a hub where consumers and institutional food buyers alike can learn about and connect with Arizona’s local food providers in order to shorten food supply chains, improve access to local, healthy foods, and strengthen community resilience to create a healthier, sustainable food system in Arizona.

When we start trying to make healthier choices, we discover that many of the choices that are good for our own personal health are also good for the environment, our community, and our local economy. It’s a virtuous cycle. Choosing the right food for our bodies helps the environment and farmers. There’s an incredible ripple effect way beyond just that one choice.
— Anna Lappé

Our Resources pages provide complementary information about food education opportunities, food access programs, and more to come. On our Blog, we provide further information on nutrition and healthy food preparation, local foods issues, farm and local food business tours, and personal food stories. We also produce a monthly local foods newsletter, The Locavore, that features local food events and news.
