Sun Sounds Studio Opens Space to Independent Podcasters

112 million Americans have listened to a podcast. That figure has grown 11 percent since 2016. As podcasts become more well-known and listener numbers grow, the number of people producing podcasts has also grown. For one local nonprofit, this is a great opportunity.

Sun Sounds of Arizona has operated a radio station out of a small nondescript office on Milton Avenue for over 20 years. The mission of Sun Sounds is to provide audio access to information to people who cannot read print because they have a disability. They do this by having local volunteers read local newspapers, grocery ads, and other print materials from their small studio.

Sharon Tewksbury-Bloom used to work at Sun Sounds and was familiar with their equipment. When Sharon decided to launch a podcast for her business, Do Good, Be Good, this year, she called the station manager, Gina Byars. Sharon wanted to interview local people about their stories of trying to help others and the challenges they face in doing so. In her business, Sharon provides training, facilitation and speaking services to public servants and mission oriented organizations. She saw the podcast as an opportunity to practice her speaking skills as well as build relationships with potential customers.

Sharon and Gina worked out an arrangement so that Sharon could record each podcast episode in the studio. This allows her to get high quality sound, equal to that of a public radio station, without having to buy the equipment or even learn how to use it. Sharon records in the studio and then saves the audio files onto a flash drive and edits the files at home using free audio editing software called Audacity. The ease of getting started with podcasting is just one reason why so many business owners are launching podcasts.

You have the opportunity to speak to your audience directly. It is a very intimate experience.
— Sharon explains.

Podcast listeners really feel like they know the podcast hosts.

Interested in Recording Your Own Podcast?

After this successful pilot, Gina has decided to offer the studio to others in the community who are interested in reserving it to record audio. The station is equipped with three microphones and high quality mixing and recording equipment. This service will be offered at a reasonable charge and the money that is earned through this service will help Sun Sounds of Arizona to increase their programming for people in northern Arizona who have a disability that prevents them from reading print.

These two studio spaces are available for your recording needs:
