At Local First Arizona, we are strong advocates of building local economies and creating a healthy environment to support the growth of sustainable communities. Earth Day falls on April 22nd, but there are plenty of events throughout the state all month long highlighting how we all can be better stewards of the Grand Canyon state.  Check out our Earth Month roundup and find events that you can support!

Southern Arizona Events

Tucson State Land Cleanup | April 6th, 10am- 12pKeep Nature Wild is hosting a cleanup at an area that desperately needs some love. Your help is needed to remove tens of thousands of pounds of trash that has accumulated over several years on Arizona State Land Department land just east of Tucson Airport. Help alone or with family and friends as every volunteer will be needed to help make progress. – MORE

Cyclovia Tucson | April 7th, 9am-3pm
Cyc˙lo˙via - A Spanish word signifying the temporary closure of a network of streets to cars so that they become “open” to people. During Cyclovia anyone can bike, walk, skate and participate in fun, free activities. Take your whole family out for this great opportunity to explore and experience Tucson’s roads without the presence of cars.  - MORE

Great American Desert: Stories Release | Tucson | April 19th, 7pm-8:30pm
Head to Fourth Ave gem Antigone Bookstore for an evening of poetry and stories focused on the desert with writers Lydia Millet and Terese Svoboda in celebration of the release of Great American Desert: Stories. – MORE

Earth Day Festival at Children's Museum | Tucson | April 20th, 10am - 2pm
Celebrate with the planet with the whole family. Engage in environmental activities for all ages, view environmental exhibits, learn about recycling and composting, how to bring nature to your backyard with exhibits from local wildlife groups and find new ways to go green in the desert.  - MORE

Earth Day at Oracle State Park | Oracle | April 20th,  9am-10pm
Come enjoy this all-day Earth Day event at one of Arizona’s scenic state parks. The day’s events include  multiple guided tours including a wildflower walk, backpack fitting demos, poetry readings, a live music concert, and an evening  star party. - MORE

Community Work Day and Planting | Tucson | April 20th, 8am-12pm
Meet your neighbors while helping create a lush example of the amazing benefits that rainwater harvesting can bring to an area.  Get hands-on with the Watershed Management Group on this project which is designed to bring water harvesting to an under-served community, beautify the area and reduce damage from flooding.  – MORE

Earth Day at Kartchner Caverns State Park | Benson | April 20th and 21st, 10am - 4pm
Learn about wildlife rehabilitation while seeing wild animals up close. Experience owl pellet dissection with help from experts and enjoy special presentations, games, and activities to celebrate the beauty of our planet and foster good stewardship of our natural resources.  – MORE

Outdoor Film Screening | Tucson | April 26th, 7pm
Las Milpitas Community Farm is the spot to be for this free outdoor showing of “Rango” hosted by Science on Screen with an introduction by the Conservation Research Scientist and Regional Outdoors Coordinator for the Sierra Club. Be sure to bring your own seating.  – MORE

City of Flagstaff Earth Day Community Clean-up | Bushmaster Park | April 20th,  9am-10:30am
Giving back to your community is one of the most rewarding ways to celebrate Earth Day. Come together with your fellow citizens at this community clean up at Bushmaster Park. Coffee and breakfast will be provided for volunteers. Please bring a refillable water bottle and travel coffee mug. – MORE

City of Flagstaff Earth Day Celebration | Bushmaster Park | April 20th, 11am - 2pm
Following the neighborhood cleanup event, head to the park for a family friendly day full of fun. The Earth Day celebration with have food trucks, live entertainment, and activities for all ages. There will be exhibitors and vendors from local organizations who will host interactive tabling to help educate the public on sustainability initiatives. - MORE

Granite Creek Cleanup | Granite Creek Park, Prescott | April 20th, 9am - 12pm
Why not spend the morning with Prescott Creeks making a difference in your community? This family-friendly event has multiple cleanup and restoration activities to choose from. Participants receive a free t-shirt along with snacks and coffee. There have been 46 tons of waste diverted from the creeks over the last 11 years - be part of this impressive change!  - MORE

The Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival provides a unique recreational experience to anyone interested in the natural world and fosters awareness of the importance of habitat for the enrichment of all life in the Verde Valley. Earth Day and Arbor Day Celebration | Red Rock State Park, Sedona | April 27th, 10am-2pm
This family friendly event has games, crafts, guided hikes and educational activities to learn about animals in our environment, dark skies and more. “A” Mountain Restoration Project | Tempe | April 6th, 9am – 11am
Tempe’s “A” Mountain needs a little TLC as the semester winds down. Volunteers will help restore hiking trails that lead up the mountain, then will be treated to a post-cleanup lunch.  - MORE

Tour de Tempe | April 7th, 7:30am – 11am
Pedal around Tempe in this 12-mile bike ride led by Mayor Mark Mitchell and members of the Tempe City Council, which starts and ends at Kiwanis Park. Free t-shirts will be available for the first 850 riders and protecting your noggin is imperative so helmets are required.  - MORE

Act For Earth Day | Fountain Hills | April 7th, 7am-11am
McDowell Mountain Regional Park is hosting a great volunteer opportunity to celebrate Earth Day! The event focuses on the mapping and removal of invasive plant species along with trail maintenance. Training, materials and snacks will be provided.  – MORE   

Party for the Planet at The Phoenix Zoo | April 13th, 9am – 4pm

River Trail & Clean Up | Peoria | April 13th, 7am-11am
Help the planet and our community this Earth Day by volunteering with the City of Peoria. Get your group together or come solo and come do your part for the planet. Help by picking up litter and debris on the Skunk Creek trail system. - MORE   

Bike to Work Day | April 17th

  • Mesa: Bicycle in or just drop by this fun event with interactive activities, prizes, a group ride led by City Council, along with a pancake and smoothie breakfast. – MORE

  • Phoenix: County and city elected officials will host a bike ride and light breakfast in downtown Phoenix with the goal of inspiring citizens to increase their fitness and decrease pollution. Registered attendees receive a free breakfast, t-shirt and are included in a raffle for prizes. - MORE

  • Scottsdale: Stations will be set up around Scottsdale with free water, drinks, snacks, bike maps and free T-shirts. - MORE

  • Tempe:  Join Mayor Mark Mitchell along with members of the Tempe City Council on a bike ride in downtown Tempe. Bicycle riders who stop by one of the participating Bike to Work Day locations in Tempe will receive a free breakfast, and the first 350 riders will receive free T-shirts. - MORE

Earth and Arbor Day Celebration | McQueen Park Activity Center, Gilbert | April 17th, 10am-12pm
Enjoy Earth Day and Arbor Day at this free family event with plenty of activities to explore and crafts to do. Learn about the environment, recycling, and Gilbert’s environmental programs. – MORE

Earth Day at the Phoenix Public Market | April 20th | 8am-1pm
Downtown Phoenix’s original farmer’s market has plenty of fun ways to celebrate Arizona’s bounty. Attend a composting workshop, cooking demonstration, drop off your electronic waste, check out a gardening activity, pick up seasonal goodies from AZ growers and browse the wares of local businesses and special earth friendly vendors. – MORE

Earth Day Zines Make-and-Take | Bookmans, Mesa | April 22nd, 7pm-9pm

Explore fashion and sustainability with six days of events. ‘River Blue’ Film Screening | Phoenix | April 23rd
