The Bisbee Block Party Was a Hit!
We know how important it is to support your local businesses, and that’s why we try to make it as easy as possible for you. Last month Local First Arizona and Subway Underground hosted our first Be Local Block Party on Subway Street in Bisbee, AZ. This allowed locals to come find out about the importance of banking locally, donating locally, shopping locally, and even drinking locally.
We started the day with a fitness class put on by Sonia Allen, and throughout the day all sorts of vendors set up in order to get the community participating.
Tombstone Brewery and Borderlands Brewing Company offered beer to all the guests in our beer garden. This gave locals the opportunity to try what’s around them. We're all aware of the large breweries, distilleries, and vineyards that are nationwide, but have you experienced your local options? Drinking locally not only supports the people and sales taxes in your community, it also offers a unique experience that you won't get anywhere else.
Western Bank also had a booth informing people about why you should bank locally. Did you know community banks provide a traditional approach to banking with a focus on using local deposits to reinvest in the local community through lending? This way your local businesses have a better opportunity of getting a loan than from a large bank. We know that local banks and credit unions lend 60% of all small business loans, despite holding less than ½ of the assets. Banking and lending locally grows communities how we want, and keep the decisions and the dollars here in Arizona. They also don't have the same prejudice lending practices as large banks- Bank of America recently faced one of the largest fines in U.S. history for prejudice lending practices.
Finally, the night ended with appetizers and deserts provided by Cafe Roka, and live music by the Whiskey Lickers. It was a great event that saw around 200 people throughout the day and we can’t wait to have another one!
