New Sustainability Series providing resources for the community
Economic sustainability has always been one of the key goals and facets of Local First Arizona's work. By supporting and strengthening the local businesses in our communities, we can help keep tax dollars in our community, which can benefit residents in the form of projects and services. Economic Sustainability is one of the Three Pillars of Sustainability, along with Environmental and Social sustainability. An economically sustainable community keeps dollars recirculating in the region to fund projects that can enhance environmental and social sustainability.
Local First Arizona has begun taking further steps to enhance our own sustainability in our day to day operations and at events. All LFA events have a newly implemented Towards Zero Waste policy, meaning that we partner with community groups and resources to maximize recycling and composting; diverting materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill.
There are many resources available to the public, and business owners, for making more sustainable choices at work and home. Local First Arizona, Green Living Magazine, Mrs. Green's World, and Laura Tanzer Atelier have teamed up to host a Sustainability Series. The series brings experts to speak with the audience, while answering questions and discussing current topics and ideas pertaining to sustainability in daily life.
The Sustainability Series is broken down into the topics of Food, Water, Waste, Energy, and Toxins. The Series is the last Wednesday of the month, and each month experts from the community are brought in to discuss one of the topics. In February, Roxanne Garcia of Heirloom Farmers Market and Kelly Waters from the Food Conspiracy Co-Op talked with guests about the importance of supporting local farmers, producers, and suppliers. The talks are very open and inviting to anyone wanting to learn about a topic or just general sustainability. The audience is more than welcome to ask their questions and engage with one another. The goal is to make the audience feel empowered when they leave, that they can make sustainable choices in their every day lives that really make a difference.
The talks are held on the last Wednesday of each month at Laura Tanzer's Atelier, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Please RSVP ahead of time, and we hope to see you there.
