Welcome to the Team, Connor!
We are excited to welcome Connor Descheemaker to the Local First Arizona team! As the Modified Arts gallery attendant, LFA staff was used to seeing Connor around the office around First and Third Fridays since we share the mixed-used space in the Roosevelt Row Arts District. Now Connor joins the LFA team officially to support our membership and place-making programs. We asked him a few questions so that you can get to know him: Tell us a bit about your background:
Born and raised in south Tempe, now proudly a resident of Garfield Historic District just outside downtown Phoenix. 2015 graduate of Barrett, the Honors College at ASU, with a BA in Urban & Metropolitan Studies.
What drew you to Local First Arizona?
Music venues in downtown Phoenix --> Located in historic buildings --> clustered into vibrant areas --> multi-use spaces. What makes it all work? Urban planning. Local First does the legwork to unite local businesses of all kinds into a movement for community control, rather than outside corporate control. It's been the organization around which I've built all of my work goals for years, and to work for such an influential organization is exactly what I had hoped for.
What is your favorite local business and why?
Biased answer: The Trunk Space--combining DIY ethics, punk rock, music and art, and meeting people from around the world into an all-ages, all-inclusive space is exactly why I believe in Localism. But I also volunteer there a lot.... (Less) biased answer: Phoenix Public Market. Uniting food, culture, and people of all different backgrounds in a weekly gathering around an essential good.
Tell us about one of your life's passions:
Without question, music, particularly live. Underground music has drawn me to all of the people and places about which I am most passionate. Go see a band you've never heard of at a venue you've never been. Trust me, it's let to the best, weirdest, and most unexpected experiences of my life.
