Localists bond over Margaritas and Mexican Food
On Thursday evening, localists came out to Los Compadres to learn all about margaritas from the talented and knowledgeable artisans of 3 Amigos Tequila. The evening started with a bit of a history lesson about the Valdivia family from Monica, the family restaurant's second generation manager. We learned that Los Compadres has been serving family recipes of Sonoran Mexican cuisine to Arizonans for over 50 years, with no plans of slowing down! After the class, they featured a succulent special of grilled fish tacos which definitely had folks sticking around.
The Margarita demonstration started out with a crash course on the classic margarita. While Ralph cut and squeezed his lemons and limes, he gave us a stronger understanding of the many different tequila options that folks have when creating their own margaritas at home. He also gave us more insight on the Gonzales family and their organic farming practices that creates delicious and sustainable tequila. We learned that their agave is grown without the use of chemicals or insecticides with sustainable farming practices that include the use of cattle and sheep that roam the land and help maintain a healthy balance between the soil and agave plants. Ralph also taught us how to make a "pineapple-serano" margarita, as well as a delicious "quatro berries" margarita with home-made purees.
The personalities of Monica, her brother David (our guacamole professor), and Ralph, were a great aspect of what made the evening so special for the group. The food and drinks were delicious, and through participating in the event, localists created new relationships with their community and the two businesses. Localists who initially came solo were laughing and telling stories with fellow localists they just met that evening. These new groups stayed sitting at their tables well past the end of the class, and all attendees chose to extend their stay with dinner and drinks. We had a great time at Los Compadres, and can't wait to go back for many more dinners with friends in the future!
