Farm to School Events in Northern Arizona

Local food seems to be on everyone's radar these days. At Local First Arizona, we have a long-standing commitment to promoting local producers, local buyers, local restaurants, food purveyors, food manufacturers and others in the local food realm. But across the state, interest in access to local, healthy food is growing, and one of the movements that is growing is the Farm to School movement. The Arizona Department of Education is working on plans to increase Farm to School opportunities throughout the state. In Yavapai County, efforts are under way to create a plan for northern Arizona growers to supply more of the county's public schools. Farmers Coffee Talk-Feb-25. 2014

To aid in these planning efforts, there are two opportunities for both buyers and producers to participate in meetings and conversations about the Farm to School concept and how this idea might work for both producers and school buyers.

The first opportunity will be held on Tuesday, February 25th in Prescott. Farmers and kitchen managers are invited to join facilitators and other producers to have a conversation about wholesale, and about needs and opportunities surrounding these types of sales. The meeting will be held at the Yavapai County Extension office from 8:30am-10:30am at 840 Rodeo Dr., Prescott (at the Rodeo Grounds). The cost to attend is free, simply r.s.v.p. to Wren Myers at [email protected] or by calling 928-308-6926.

BG Meeting (Northeren AZ 2014)-1The second meeting will be held on March 13 from 9am-11:30am at the Yavapai County Extension office, at 840 Rodeo Dr., Building C in Prescott. This will be the first series of regional buyer-supplier meetings, dedicated to moving local food into Arizona schools. The group will bring together producers, processors, distributors, shippers and school food buyers to discuss the benefits and challenges of putting locally grown food into school meals.
