Members mentioned in the Arizona Republic's "100 Best Things About Arizona"
Earlier this week, in anticipated celebration of Arizona's centennial, the Arizona Republic's Travel Section compiled a list of the "100 Best Things About Arizona." Their list highlights many of the wonderful things about our state, and even mentions some Local First members! Here's a recap of what the Republic had to say:
"This Southeast Arizona community, once a booming copper-mining town, has reinvented itself as a funky place to relax and visit galleries, restaurants, coffee shops and bars. Fans of chain hotels will be disappointed, as most of the lodging offerings are in cool historical buildings downtown or renovated homes and cottages on side streets."
We agree, Bisbee is awesome! Check out our listings of local Bisbee attractions, inns, retailers, and restaurants for a fun weekend trip.
"This town was built on the side of Cleopatra Hill during the copper boom in territorial days. Today, it is a funky, friendly place to relax, shop and explore..."
Jerome is beautiful this time of year, and you can check out our new Verde Valley Small Wonders Map to see all the unique places you can visit while exploring the Jerome area! You can get started on planning a day trip or weekend getaway right now!
The Phoenix Zoo
"You don't have to travel far to see native and exotic wildlife. The Phoenix Zoo has animals from Arizona and around the world. The zoo does more than just put animals on display. It is dedicated to conservation and helping endangered species with its breeding programs."
The weather is finally cooling down, and now is a great opportunity to see everything that the Phoenix Zoo has to offer!
"The Heard conveys Indian heritage without putting it in the distant past. Although there is plenty of history to be learned here, the museum shows and sells the work of living artists. Docents lead free guided tours, and popular events such as the hoop-dancing competition and Navajo weavers marketplace bring traditional arts to life."
With many wonderful exhibits on display, you can spend an entire day exploring the rooms of the Heard Museum. While you're there, don't forget to check out the gift shop!
Four Peaks Brewery
"Arizona has a number of good brewpubs, and Four Peaks in Tempe is one of our favorites. We're partial to the Hop Knot, an IPA with a strong, yet smooth, punch. The beers are served in a red-brick building constructed in 1892 as a creamery. Today, cows have been replaced by college kids and other fans of good suds who come for the brews and tastybar snacks."
With happy hours from 3pm - 7pm and from 10pm - close, any day is a good day to grab a beer at Four Peaks! And right now, for a limited time, their seasonal Pumpkin Porter is available!
Taliesin West (Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation)
"Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built this Scottsdale property in the 1930s as his winter home, studio and school for budding architects. Bounded by desert and the McDowell Mountains, the structures incorporate rocks and boulders found onsite. A variety of indoor and outdoor tours is offered... The Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard location is not the remote area it was in the '30s, but Taliesin still feels like a getaway."
With a number of various tour options, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation offers a rare view into the history of Arizona architecture.
"There are more than 30 wineries and vineyards in Arizona, spread out from Chino Valley in the north to Bowie in the southeast... The wine-growing areas are about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Phoenix during the day, and they cool off quickly at night."
Local First has many vineyard members all over Arizona! Peruse our listings to find one you'd like to visit, and maybe you can help out during harvest season!
