Michael Peel Joins Local First Arizona as Southern Arizona Director

Local First Arizona (LFA) announced this week that Michael Peel will be joining their staff as Southern Arizona Director. In this role, Peel will be responsible for managing LFA operations, membership, and programs in Tucson and the encompassing region.

Peel has spent his career developing and facilitating community-based partnerships and collaborations, creating innovative long-lasting programs responsive to community issues lacking needed support, and bringing key partners together to create community and statewide solutions. As Community and Government Relations Liaison at Pima Community College District, Peel was responsible for building and maintaining partnerships through community outreach, as well as developing legislative advocacy networks to collaborate with state, federal, and local elected officials, governmental and community agencies, business groups and coalitions, faith-based establishments, nonprofit organizations, administrators, staff, students, and the general public. As Development and Jobs Director of Uncommon Good, a grassroots non-profit organization, Peel led the formation of a regional coalition that successfully competed for federal funds of nearly $900,000 for a green jobs program.

Peel has also served on a variety of boards, including most recently the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Tucson Emerging 2030 District, and Tucson Clean and Beautiful. Peel was one of the key leaders who worked to reorganize USGBC Arizona efforts in Tucson to ensure a strong and ongoing presence in the southern Arizona region. Due to these efforts, he was honored in August, 2016, as the USGBC 2016 Volunteer of the Year, Arizona Community.

“As a native Tucsonan, I care deeply about supporting and improving my community by supporting local businesses and further developing economic pathways for its citizens. I am thrilled to join the Local First Arizona team and for the opportunity to contribute to such an organization that shares my commitment to social justice, equity, and economic equality.”

Peel’s dedication to the community and workplace background made him the ideal candidate to take the reins as Local First Arizona’s Southern Arizona Director. “Tucson is a vital part of Arizona’s overall local economy, which is why our efforts to support and cultivate a thriving local businesses community in the greater Tucson area is a significant part of Local First Arizona’s overall strategy,” said Kimber Lanning, Founder and Executive Director of Local First Arizona. “I am confident that Michael will excel in his role with us and continue to grow our reach and influence in Tucson and across southern Arizona.”

The position of Southern Arizona Director was previously held by Erika Mitnik-White for the last three years, who had built a strong foundation for Local First Arizona in Tucson by growing the local business coalition membership to more than 500-strong. Mitnik-White returned to her career in data and analysis by recently accepting a position with the American Board of Radiology.
