Another class of local business owners have completed the Fuerza Local Business Accelerator Program and are preparing to apply their newfound skills and resources to their own businesses. Fuerza Local, meaning “Local Strength” in Spanish, is Local First Arizona’s Spanish language initiative, which includes the Business Accelerator as one of its programs. The six-month program is designed to teach Spanish-speaking business owners important basics for successfully owning and operating their business. “This is our sixth Accelerator class,” says Edgar Olivo, Director of the Fuerza Local Business Accelerator Program. “Nearly half of the participants did not even have business checking accounts or businesses registered with the State of Arizona when they started with us, and now they have access to tools, information, and resources for successfully running and expanding their businesses.”
Fuerza Local Business Accelerator students attend a series of twelve courses on a variety of topics, including marketing, business planning, customer service, and others. Students are also taught about the importance of financial management by participating in an eMoneyPool, an online tool that harnesses the power of group cooperation to help members of that group save for their goals. At the end of the program, each student has saved $1,000 through the eMoneyPool, which is then matched by a scholarship from Fuerza Local. Each student also opens has the opportunity to open a line of credit at Arizona-based MariSol Federal Credit Union to establish a business credit history.
“We founded the Fuerza Local Business Accelerator Program to give Spanish-speaking communities the opportunity to build prosperity for themselves through owning and operating their own businesses,” said Kimber Lanning, Founder and Director of Local First Arizona. “We can see that our efforts through this small program is already having an effect, as participants of the Fuerza Local Business Accelerator have created a combined 60 new jobs since graduating.”
