Jazz Comes to Tucson in January

Jimmy Heath, one of the headline acts at this year's Jazz Festival. The HSL Properties Tucson Jazz Festival is taking place in downtown Tucson this year, from January 14th through the 24th. In its second year, the festival promises to be a dynamic and exciting 10 days. With most of the country under a cold winter chill, Tucson is the perfect place for musicians to come warm up and put on some great shows in the Old Pueblo!

This year's Festival guest of honor is NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Jimmy Heath performing his arrangements with the Tucson Jazz Institute's award-winning Ellington Band at the opening concert on Jan. 14 at the Fox Tucson Theatre. The Snarky Puppy show at the Rialto Theatre on Jan. 15 is selling fast with a burlesque and jazz show afterward. The first weTucson Jazz Festival logoekend includes Byron Stripling playing New Orleans-style jazz with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra on January 16th and 17th at the TCC Music Hall. January 17th is a busy day for the Festival and includes not only Byron, but the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour at the University of Arizona's Centennial Hall and Arthur Vint and Associates in two shows at Club Congress. The second week kicks off with the free day-long Downtown Jazz Fiesta on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 18th, with a great lineup including Tucson bands Orkesta MendozaDepedro with special guests, Manteca, Lo Bros, and musicians Jeff HaskellKatherine ByrnesJoe Bourne, and Jenny Scheinman and Tony Scherr. And Wednesday, January 20th, brings Jon Weber's "115 Years of Jazz Piano" to the University of Arizona's Crowder Hall.

Tucson Jazz

On Jan. 21 Grammy winner Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Band will be performing at the Fox Tucson Theatre. The Rad Trads perform their energetic music on Jan. 22 also at the Fox. The final weekend includes two shows at the Rialto Theatre: Jazz vocalist Lizz Wright on Jan. 23 and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins on Jan. 24.
