This post guest written by LFA Intern, Jessica Estrada. Looking for something fun to do with family and friends this Saturday? Look no further, The Big Green Marana Event is taking place November 7 from 10 am to 3 pm at the Silverbell District Park at Cortaro Road and Silverbell. It is a great opportunity to learn about sustainability and have fun at the same time! "Sustainability in our local community is so important because it affects all aspects of how we live our daily lives and how our world looks to future generations," comments Local First Arizona Membership Coordinator CJ Agbannawag, a graduate of the University of Arizona's Sustainable Built Environments program. The idea for The Big Green Marana Event first began when Rebecca Kososkie, membership director for the Marana Chamber and Sue Hayes, owner of Hayes Construction met at a business mixer and discussed their ideas about Marana businesses going green. The Green Committee was formed and their mission began in educating others about the benefits of going green.
The Big Green Marana Event features local businesses and how they are going green. The whole Southern Arizona community is invited to be part of the event to have fun and learn more about sustainable practices! Activities include: green vendor displays, a main stage with demonstrations, hands-on Big Green kid’s activity tent and kid’s zone, interactive money-saving tips and workshops for residents and businesses, tree planting ceremony, and raffles, entertainment and food! The Pima Association of Governments (PAG) and Clean Cities will be hosting an alternative vehicle display to familiarize folks with the latest electric vehicle technologies.
Some of the companies that will be sharing their innovative green technology through workshops are Tucson Electric Power, Marana Watershed Management, and the Marana Environmental Bat Expert. Local First Arizona member A&E Recycled Granite will be showing how scraps of granite can become beautiful tile work, plus many other demonstrations by other businesses. Make sure to stop by their workshops! Other members in attendance will be 26 Point 2 Designs, Americas Mattress, B&J Refrigeration, Sunshine Experts and Vantage West Credit Union. Be sure to stop by the Local First Arizona table as well, where we will be hosting a temporary tattoo parlor to mark folks as proud Localists!
The main stage will be featuring Hayes Construction demonstration of the use of green building materials to build a home; and Chef Carmella will be showing everyone how to create a great meal with leftovers. Green Hypnotist Michael De Schalit will also be present, and Gina Murphy-Darling of Mrs. Green's World will talk about her book. She will also be signing autographs.
Tucson Clean and Beautiful Trees for Tucson and Marana Parks and Recreation will be planting trees near the edge of Santa Cruz, and this ceremony is hoped to be the beginning of a commemorative tree park with benches along the river. Help them plant a tree to make Marana’s landscape more beautiful and enjoyable.
The Big Green Marana Event’s goal is to educate homeowners and businesses about sustainable practices that will ultimately save them money by reducing energy and waste. Admission is free! Stop by and bring a recyclable or non-perishable food item to donate to the Marana Food Bank and learn what local businesses are doing to be part of the going green movement.
