This post guest written by LFA Intern Lorena Contreras Mark your calendars, because Tucson’s Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Local First Arizona Founder Kimber Lanning will be kicking off Local First Arizona’s Buy Local Month at the Tucson Museum of Art Holiday Artisans Market Saturday, November 21st at 11:45 am. Rothschild and Lanning will highlight Buy Local Month and the importance of all of us buying local for the holidays. We can all embrace the holiday season to make an impact with our shopping by supporting local businesses and artisans. Local First Arizona’s Buy Local Month celebrates importance of buying local for the holidays through a month long campaign all across Arizona. From November 27 to December 24, 2015, all Arizonans have an opportunity to give unique gifts to your loved ones while keeping money in the local economy to build vibrant communities.
The National Retail Federation estimates that American consumers will spend over $600 billion this holiday season. In 2015 holiday sales in the United States expect to increase 3.7% to $630 billion. That is a lot of money spend over one month! By mindfully spending those dollars we can give gifts to our loved ones and help sustain local economy. Lanning notes that “If everyone in a city the size of Tucson shifted just 10 percent of their spending from national to locally owned businesses, it would create an average of 132 million new dollars recirculating in the local economy, 1,600 brand-new jobs and $52 million in new local wages just in a single year.” ‘Tis the season to be local! That sounds like a triple win for your holiday shopping.
Buy Local Month is Local First Arizona’s month-long campaign to remind Arizonans to support our local businesses during the holiday season. The campaign features fun shopping events, highlights special offers from independent businesses, and much more. The best part is that you can be part of a state wide community that chooses local local first.
