In recognition of National Independents Week, Local First Arizona will honor locally owned and independent businesses in Tucson and across the state from Sunday, June 29, through Sunday, July 6. The nationwide Independents Week campaign, coordinated by the American Independent Business Alliance and also known as “Indie Week,” takes place during the week of Independence Day with the purpose of enlightening consumers to the importance of supporting local businesses.
To kick off Independents Week, Local First Arizona is planning the Passport to Local Success event on Saturday, June 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Downtown Tucson. Attendees will receive a shopping passport listing 20 local merchants along 4th Avenue and Congress Street. Attendees will receive a stamp on their passport for each business visited, and passports with five stamps can enter the Local First Arizona raffle drawing for baskets filled with great items from some of Tucson’s local businesses.
“Passport to Local Success will be a great opportunity for Tucsonans to have some fun and get to know the local businesses in their neighborhood,” says Erika Mitnik-White, Tucson Membership Coordinator for Local First Arizona. “Our mission with Independents Week is to celebrate everything that Tucson’s local businesses contribute to the community, as up to four times more money stays in the local community when you support Arizona’s independently owned businesses rather than national chains.”
Independents Week also means the return of the popular Golden Coupon, the ticket to saving 20% off purchases from hundreds of locally owned establishments including auto repairs, home furnishing stores, boutiques, florists, restaurants, yoga studios, nurseries, and more (a list of participating businesses will be available at http://localfirstaz.com/independents-week/ in early June). Attendees of the Passport to Local Success can use their Golden Coupons one day early at passport stops for a sneak peak of local savings. Attendees can get their Golden Coupon by attending the Passport to Local Success or by picking up a copy of the Arizona Jewish Post that week. Tucsonans can also download the Golden Coupon to their phone by visiting http://localfirstaz.com/independents-week/.
Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Ryan Gaudioso of the Tucson Firefighters Association will also help Local First Arizona celebrate the start of Independents Week with some remarks on the importance of supporting local businesses at 4:00 p.m. at Haggerty Plaza at 316 N. 4th Avenue, Tucson. Mayor Rothschild will discuss how supporting local Tucson businesses creates a stronger and more vibrant Tucson, and Gaudioso will talk about the Tucson Fire Fighters latest efforts to “go local” and make the switch to local businesses for their a variety of services.
Tucsonans can also enjoy a variety of local activities at the Passport to Local Success. Borderlands Brewing has brewed a special Indie Week Horchata Cream Ale, a cream ale base with rice, cinnamon and Mexican vanilla, as the local ale of Independents Week. The ale will be available on tap at Che's Lounge on 4th Avenue and a variety of other local merchants. A limited edition Local First Arizona shirt by Fed By Threads will be available for sale at the event. Attendees will also enjoy live music, children's activities, and additional specials from participating merchants.
Details for this event and Independents Week will be updated at http://localfirstaz.com/independents-week/.
