This past Sunday, April 27th, marked the first dedicated Localist event in Southern Arizona at Diablo Burger and Good Oak Bar. What does "dedicated" mean? It means that it was the first event organized especially for our Localist membership in Tucson and we couldn't have been more proud to have Diablo Burger/Good Oak Bar as our host. When owner Derrick Widmark first came on board, we knew it was the perfect fit- one of Arizona's most sustainable restaurants, an exemplary steward of food and beverages produced in Arizona, and a promoter of sustainable land management (via the Diablo Trust) was the ideal place to introduce Localists to the benefits they get with membership.
We met at the good Oak Bar in downtown Tucson, located next door to their sister restaurant, Diablo Burger. Opened in the Fall of 2013, the Good Oak Bar is a cozy, wood and brick lounge with a neighborhood feel and a great view of bustling Congress Street. Derrick gave us all five of the booths in the Bar and 28 Localists happily filled them with the promise of delicious Diablo burgers, appetizers and their choice of a tasting flight of Arizona-made beer or wine.
We were all pleased to meet each other and to meet Derrick, who took time to sit at each table and explain Diablo's commitment to helping create a sustainable food system in Arizona. Sourcing locally produced food and beverages and supporting the Diablo Trust are the benchmarks of his businesses, and are examples of how business can be economically sustainable while being socially and environmentally sustainable at the same time. By the time Derrick made it through all our tables, everyone had their burgers and were well on our way to being satiated.
We were very pleased to hear how excited people were to meet each other, as very few people in attendance had met one another before. As everyone left, or regrouped for more drinks at the bar, we heard time and time again what a great group of people we had amassed for our event. We couldn't agree more and we can't wait to do this again! We have some great events in the works with the likes of Bookman's, Hotel Congress, Sun link and more- we will surely keep you posted.
Enormous thanks to Derrick and his amazing staff for taking time to make us feel more than welcome last weekend. We will not forget this experience! Huge thanks also go out to Erika Mitnik-White, Membership Coordinator for LFA in Southern Arizona for putting this event together and to the LFA Tucson Steering Committee for helping us get the word out. We couldn't have done it without you. Until next time!
