March Lunch Mixer: República Empanada Recap

logoRepública Empanada is a family-owned restaurant in Downtown Mesa that’s been cooking up Latin American favorites with a twist for almost a year now! General Manager, Marco Meraz, told us he and his parents wanted to share their love for Latin American food with others and felt Downtown Mesa was the perfect fit to open up an eatery featuring favorites from Central and South America. photo 2-3On their menu you’ll find fresh salads, amazing appetizers and platters, but the most famous thing on the menu is, well, the empanadas! If you’re unfamiliar, an empanada is a Latin pastry stuffed with various meats, cheeses, veggies and fruits, and then is fried to a perfect golden brown. At República Empanada, they’re turning these traditional favorites upside down with 22 different savory and sweet combinations such as: Jalapeño Popper, Hawaiian and Nutella + Banana.

Check out their Flight Night every Monday & Tuesday where you’ll get a flight of 4 beers and any 4 empanadas, all for just $20!

Recently, Local First Arizona ventured downtown to host our March Lunch Mixer, but mostly we had to try these creative combinations we've been hearing so much about! Stepping inside, owners Marco, Jinette and Edmundo Meraz have created a colorful, modern style that permeates throughout their restaurant. Featured on the south wall is local artist, Lauren Lee, who lent her artistic expression to create a unique mural just for República Empanada.

Head down to República Empanada on March 21st for an Art|Garden|Music event with artist Lauren Lee and featuring music with a garden party!

photo 3-2Our Executive Director, Kimber Lanning, stopped in to share lunch and conversation with everyone that attended too. We would also like to recognize NEDCO, (Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation), in Mesa for coming out to lunch with us as well. They are a great organization helping to provide loans and development assistance to start up businesses, non-profits and so much more! After our lunch, members visited the Mesa Urban Garden just next door where the individuals can rent plots to plant fruits and vegetables year-round.

Come with us next month as we head to tasty Thai Lotus in Phoenix! Check out the details and register here: April Lunch Mixer
