Member spotlight for northern Arizona: Alcantara Vineyard and Winery Alcantara Vineyard and Winery is located on 87 acres of sloping limestone at the confluence of the Verde River and Oak Creek, the only year-round flowing rivers in Arizona. The Verde River flows around the picturesque property and Oak Creek empties into the Verde River. The property is bordered by cliffs, across the Verde River, and the basin has caves that were used by the Native Americans. Petroglyphs’ have been found on some of the cave walls. This Verde River valley has a long history in farming, from Native American times to present day. It is the perfect micro-climate for growing grapes and making Arizona wines!
Alcantara is a family-owned, local business that began in 2004. Owner Barbara Predmore states “the rocky limestone soil and sunny climate in the Verde is very similar to the wine making regions of France and Italy and after two years of experimentation the results are everything we hoped for and then some.”.
The vines that are planted at Alcantara Vineyards include merlot, syrah, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, viogner, petite syrah, charbono, mouvedre, orange muscat and pinot noir. From these Arizona vines, the winery is able to make six white wines, including favorites like its sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio and mesa blanco. There are ten red wines featured total, including the unique mourvedre, zinfandel and merlot, which are all made with Arizona grapes. Lastly, if you're looking for a sweeter taste in wine, try the Alcantara moscato for a lovely dessert.
Make sure to check out the Alcantara Vineyard Wine Club! Members get special discounts, six free member-only wine tastings per year, a free winery tour for you & your party, and special rates on (including free access to some) local attractions.
