This year's Independents Week was the best yet, with even more Arizonan's participating in the weeklong party celebrating our independent businesses! Here are some of the highlights from this year's campaign: Participating Businesses Up 50% This year, over 300 local businesses from Flagstaff to Tucson participated in Independents Week by accepting the Golden Coupon. That's 50% more participating businesses than 2012!
Unprecedented Media Reach This year's media coverage of Independents Week in Arizona was outstanding. Our Independents Week video played on AZTV for the entire week and was seen by 114,000 people (did you see it?). LFA Director Kimber Lanning also appeared on AZTV's Morning Scramble. Several of our staff members also appeared on well-listened to radio programs such as Rosie On The House and KVOI's The Voice. Our spot on KJZZ and KBAQ was heard by over 250,000 Arizonans! Additionally, the Indie Week PSA aired 64 times on KXCI Community Radio in Tucson, reaching thousands. Independents Week was also featured or mentioned in over 40 different online and print publications including azcentral.com, Zocalo Magazine, Phoenix Business Journal, East Valley Tribune, TucsonSentinel.com, The Noise, North Central News, Tucson Citizen, Arizona Daily Star, West Valley View, Downtown Phoenix Journal, and many others.
Creative Methods for Spreading The Word This year, we used some creative methods for getting the word out about Independents Week. We included 500 Golden Coupons in Chow Locally's CSA shares! We also had audio PSAs playing inside all of Bashas' grocery stores for the entire week.
More Activities and Events The entire week for Independents Week was filled with exciting events around the state to celebrate local businesses. In Tucson, we hosted a film screening at The Loft Cinema and coordinated a local beer dinner with Food Conspiracy Co-Op and Dragoon Brewing Company. In Tempe, we planned an Indie Week Pub Crawl along Mill Avenue and visited some of Tempe's best local bars, including Tempe's Front Porch, Robbie Fox's Public House, Canteen Modern Tequila, Handlebar, and Bison Witches. 60 people attended the pub crawl that night, and estimating that each person spent $4 at each of the five bars, $1,200 was injected into local Mill Avenue businesses on an otherwise sleepy night.
Increased Visitors to the Independents Week Website We had more visitors than in previous years to the Independents Week website, meaning even more eyes were looking at our participating members! We had 370 people sign our Independents Week Pledge to go local for the week (and beyond!). During Independents Week alone, our website had 16,000 visits and over 50,000 page views, and 73% of these visitors were new visitors.
