Tempe Icon House of Tricks Celebrates 25 Years

It may be hard to believe for Bob and Robin Trick, but the restaurant they opened 25 years ago on 7th Street in Tempe has turned into an icon of the city and continues to feed thousands of hungry Arizonans every year. The husband-and-wife team have done well to preserve the historical character of the 1920’s bungalows in which they opened the House of Tricks.

“When we selected the little shabby house down the street, everyone thought we were crazy,” said Robin. “Well, it may have taken a little longer for folks to discover us, but we have built a very loyal clientele. There is no way we could have created the atmosphere we have here on the main street. It is like an oasis in the city… quiet, lush and charming,” she added.

House of Tricks has received countless honors over the years, including more recent accolades as “Best Patio Dining Al Fresco” and “Best Romantic Dinner.” Guests especially enjoy the tree-shaded patio rimmed with colorful flowers and vines, and voted it one of the top outdoor dining spots in the country.  The setting is especially popular for celebratory occasions, as House of Tricks hosts a multitude of university graduation dinners (including my own!). The restaurant also attracts an eclectic clientele, including ASU faculty and staff, business professionals, and local residents.

The Tricks have been very active in the local community, hosting an annual fundraiser from which they donate to local charities, particularly those that support children and the arts. They are especially proud of receiving the 2010 Business Excellence Award from the Tempe Chamber of Commerce that recognizes companies whose practices in business growth, employee development, community involvement and customer service exemplify excellence.

As if you didn't need any more reasons to visit the House of Tricks, their food is also exquisite!  Their seasonally-inspired menus change regularly and reflect an eclectic blend of cultures and flavors, featuring the freshest produce available.  So if you find yourself hungry and in Tempe, drop by the House of Tricks to wish them a happy anniversary and enjoy a nice meal.
